Presentation Overview:
The Darwin Bridges – World’s First Bridges Built of Concrete and Recycled Glass Powder:
This webinar will discuss the theory and application of recycled ground glass powder (GGP) in concrete. The presentation will be divided into two parts.
To start, Professor Arezki Tagnit-Hamou from the Université de Sherbrooke will provide an overview of the use of GGP in concrete including the material science and theoretical basis for the technology.
Following that, Étienne Cantin Bellemare and Sacha Dumeignil from the City of Montreal will summarize the application of this technology in the recently completed Darwin Bridge project – the world’s first bridge structure using concrete with recycled glass powder.

Presenter Bios:
Dr. Arezki Tagnit-Hamou, B. Sc. A, Ph. D., Ing., is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Sherbrooke (Canada), Head of Cement and Concrete Research Group, and Chairholder of an Industrial Research Chair. His research interests are microstructure and chemistry of cement and concrete, and alternative cementitious materials. As a chairholder he works on glass valorization in concrete. He is an author of many peer-reviewed publications and holds a patent on glass UHPC. He is the chair of the International Conference on Cementitious Materials and Alternative Binders for Sustainable Concrete. Dr. Arezki is active on technical committees within ACI, ASTM, RILEM, and CSA. He is a recipient of the ACI’s Jean-Claude Roumain Innovation in Concrete Award and was elected to a Fellow of the Institute (FACI) in 2009.
Étienne Cantin Bellemare, Eng., PMP, LEED GA, ENV SP, is a Principal Engineer at the City of Montreal's Bridges and Tunnels Department. He has designed several structures including highway bridges, mobile bridges, temporary bridges, and suspended pedestrian bridges in Canada and South Africa. He has been involved in several pilot projects using innovative materials such as UHPFRC, aluminium structure, FRP rebar and stainless steel. Mr. Cantin Bellemare sits on a CSA technical committee about pedestrian bridges and he is an administrator of the Montreal Structural Engineers Association.
Sacha Dumeignil, Eng., works for the Expertise and Technical support Division of the city of Montreal. Its role is to provide technical assistance according to his fields of concrete expertise to various City stakeholders in the design and/or execution of infrastructure projects and to issue expert opinions and technical recommendations as required. He is also a board member of the East Ontario and Quebec Chapter of ACI and he is a part of the work table of Standard groups on concrete such as CSA and BNQ, Sacha Dumeignil participated in partnership with various stakeholders from the City, organizations and academic institutions, in research and development projects on new and more efficient materials aimed at optimizing the sustainability of the City's infrastructure in a context of sustainable development.
