Presentation Overview:
Durable Infrastructure Incorporating UHPC:
Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is a class of cementitious materials with excellent mechanical and durability properties. UHPC has a high compressive strength (minimum 120 MPa) and very low permeability. The inclusion of discrete fibres provides UHPC with a reliable tensile capacity, which can be directly considered during structural design. These superior properties compared to conventional concrete can be exploited to construct durable infrastructure in a cost-effective manner.
This presentation will highlight the characteristics of UHPC and how the material properties are classified in current Canadian standards. A variety of recent example applications will be explained, including use as part of bridge deck upgrading, a column jacketing project as part of a seismic retrofit, and an innovative use to encapsulate the deteriorating joints on a steel girder bridge.

Presenter: Katrin Habel, Dr.sc.techn., P.Eng
Presenter Bio:
Katrin Habel, Dr.sc.techn., P.Eng., is a structural bridge engineer with over 25 years experience, with a focus on the design and rehabilitation for bridges, culverts, retaining walls and other structures. Since 2018 she has managed Associated Engineering’s Transportation Structures Group in Vancouver, BC. She obtained her doctoral degree in Switzerland in 2004 and was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Toronto from 2005 to 2006. Her research focused on UHPC and the application of UHPC for rehabilitation and strengthening. Katrin is active in the development of codes and standards in Canada and internationally. She was the Chair of a Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC) task force from 2015 to 2025 that developed the design provisions for fibre-reinforced concrete and UHPC incorporated in CSA S6’s Annex A8.1. For the current code cycle, Katrin is the Chair of concrete technical subcommittee of CSA S6. She also remains active on several ACI committees, including ACI 239 – UHPC and ACI 445A – Strut and Tie Modeling. Katrin received the 2015 ACI Awards of Excellence – First Price Award in Repair & Restoration Category for Mission Bridge Seismic Retrofit with UHPC and the 2019: CSA Award of Merit for her work leading the creation of Annex A8.1 of CSA S6.
