Presentation Overview:

With repeated exposure to moisture, freeze–thaw cycling, and chlorides from de-icing salts, parking structures operate in a harsh environment throughout their service life. Long-term durability begins at the design stage and depends on coordinated decisions in detailing, material selection, construction practices, and maintenance planning. This presentation introduces key durability concepts in CSA S413, supported by industry best practices from CSA, ACI, and the National Parking Association, and informed by experience in the design of new structures as well as the assessment, repair, and rehabilitation of existing facilities. Topics include protection systems, drainage and waterproofing, concrete exposure classifications, corrosion risk, and common detailing oversights that contribute to premature deterioration.

Presenter Bio:

Derek J. Mizak, P.Eng., President, Crosier Kilgour

Since joining Crosier Kilgour in 1997, Derek has specialized in the investigation, assessment, restoration, and protection of existing structures with an emphasis on the repair and restoration of cast-in-place, pre-cast, and post-tensioned concrete structures. His area of practice also includes assessment and certification of existing fall protection systems and the design of new fall arrest and fall protection systems. Derek became a principal at Crosier Kilgour in 2008 and took on the role of President in January 2023.

Derek graduated from the University of Manitoba with a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering in 1996 and worked briefly at a local geotechnical engineering firm prior to starting at Crosier Kilgour. He is a registered professional engineer in the Province of Manitoba, past president of the Manitoba Chapter of The American Concrete Institute (ACI). Professional affiliations include the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI), Sealant Waterproofing and Restoration Institute (SWRI), and Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI).
