Presentation Overview:
Concrete Coatings for Improved Durability:
Concrete elements made with portland and blended cements—such as bridge decks, pavements, parking slabs, and piers—often deteriorate prematurely due to freeze–thaw cycles, carbonation, sulfate attack, and deicing chemicals. Controlling fluid transport through concrete surfaces is therefore critical to improving durability. Surface treatments, particularly protective coatings, offer an effective strategy to limit ingress of aggressive agents and reduce maintenance and repair costs. This presentation reviews coating classifications and relevant code provisions, and highlights recent advances in nanocomposite coating systems developed by the author’s group. Emphasis is placed on laboratory and field evaluations of their performance against frost damage, chlorides, sulfates, carbonation, and acid attack.
Learning Objectives: Participants will be able:
1- Identify and differentiate between various classifications of surface treatments used for the protection of concrete infrastructure.
2- Recognize and interpret examples of codes and guides regarding concrete durability exposures and application of coatings.
3- Learn about the development of advanced nanocomposite systems and evaluate their laboratory and field performance under specific durability exposures.
Presenter: Dr. Mohamed T. Bassuoni, Ph.D., P.Eng., FACI
